Library Contact Information

The Nicholson Memorial Library System got its start a few years after a tragic tornado ripped through Garland in 1927. Fourteen people lost their lives in the storm, including Mrs. Missouri Nicholson and her son, S. E. Nicholson.  Mrs. Nicholson's second son, W. R. of Longview, Texas, purchased a former bank building on the downtown square and donated it to the city with the intention of having it remodeled as a library and community center. The library, which opened in December 1933, served as a memorial for his lost family members.

The library is operated by the city of Garland, and within its four locations, it houses more than 430,000 items in its collection. Each location hosts programs for children and adults.
