Gear up for Garland’s Relay For Life; first meeting scheduled

Posted February 2, 2012

All systems are in high gear for the Saturday, May 5 and Sunday, May 6 Relay For Life of Garland event. Planning and preparations are almost complete.  Entertainment, games, a children’s play area and plenty of raffle items will all be a part of this year’s event. Start time is 5:00 p.m. and the event begins with the survivors lap.

More than 100 cancer survivors are expected to participate, and caregivers will join the survivors for the last half of the first lap. All participants will then take to the track for the team lap.  20 teams have registered to date with more expected.  After the team lap the relay gets underway in earnest.  At least one member from each team will be on the track walking all the time.  The teams will walk in relay for 12 hours.

Performances by live bands will begin at 6 p.m.  Luminaria ceremony and a time to remember those who have lost the battle against cancer will take place at 10 p.m.   All of the stadium lights will be extinguished and the only illumination will be from the Luminarias.  It is a very moving and emotional time. Then at midnight it’s FIGHT BACK time with another special ceremony.  There will be entertainment and games going on all night.  Special theme laps and lots more.

The first meeting for Team Captains will be Monday, February 6th in Schreiber Hall at First United Methodist Church in Garland at 7:00 p.m. and anyone interested in starting a team should attend.  If you don’t know about The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life, this is a perfect opportunity to come out and find out about what we do. There is no obligation.  Luminarias can be purchased and the bags picked up to be decorated.

This is going to be the biggest and best Relay For Life of Garland yet!  Volunteers are always needed for a variety of tasks.  Check the event website at www.relayforlife.org/garlandtx or contact Event Chair Mary Ramsey at 214-605-8641 for more information.  Together we can make a difference in the fight against cancer.
