Rein in holiday stress

Kim Everett | December 13, 2011

Some of the biggest causes of holiday stress include:  increased physical demands, more demands on your time, unrealistic expectations, and family conflicts.  There are parties to attend, cards to send, meals to cook, friends and family to visit, gifts to buy, and the list continues.  There isn’t enough time in a day to get everything done.

Add unrealistic expectations of how the holiday is supposed to be to the already unmanageable physical demands and lack of time, and the results can be disastrous.

In addition, more time is spent with family during the holidays, which can result in old feelings, conflicts and emotions surfacing, expectations of family members to behave a certain way, and feelings of disappointment when they do not.

Decrease family drama by practicing a few simple strategies:

  • Hold your tongue.  It’s alright to let things go sometimes.
  • Remind yourself that everyone is stressed and that it is often better to practice forgiveness and accept your family for who they are.  Every conflict doesn’t always have to be aired out.
  • Make allowances for the fact that your opinion of how to celebrate might not be the same as other family members’ opinions.
  • Be as agreeable as possible without allowing yourself to be bullied.  Saying yes when you really want to say no will cause resentment and ill feelings.

To decrease the physical demands, as well as demands on your time, try the following:

  • Define what a meaningful holiday consists of.
  • Be mindful of the moment.  Don’t be in a rush.
  • Set limits.  Decide how many parties/activities your family can realistically attend.
  • Reserve time to help others by volunteering at a homeless shelter, providing food for needy families, visiting shut-ins or nursing home residents.
  • Don’t put things off until the last minute.
  • Stay on your regular routine as much as possible.
  • Take 15 minutes a day to relax alone.
  • Watch your diet.  The more fats and sugar you consume, the lower your energy level will be.

Use the following ideas to rein in your expectations:

  • Remember that the perfect holidays you see on television are just that – on television.
  • Don’t be upset if something goes wrong – it’s not the end of the world if your pie doesn’t turn out right or if the rolls get a little too brown.
  • Let it be OK that everyone is different, with different ideas.  Their version of the “best holiday ever” might not be the same as yours.
  • Do not expect family members and friends to act the way you think they should act.
  • Instead of expecting things to be perfect, adjust your attitude to one of making the best of whatever happens.
  • Don’t sweat the small stuff.
  • Keep things in perspective.  If something goes wrong, ask yourself if it will matter in five years.
  • Keep your sense of humor.

Make holiday safety a priority

Kim Everett | December 8, 2011

Safety is often overlooked during the hustle and bustle of the holidays, and becoming the victim of an accident or a crime can ruin an otherwise joyous time.  To ensure a great holiday season, be on the lookout for potential hazards.

Fire Safety

  • Check all light strands to be sure that the plastic insulation is intact.
  • Use surge protectors instead of extension cords, and do not overload electrical outlets.
  • Leave at least 36” of space all the way around space heaters.  Replace any heater over 15 years old with one that has the UL symbol.  Be mindful of pets around heaters.
  • Be sure that batteries in smoke alarms are good.  Do not take batteries out of smoke alarms for new toys.
  • A well-watered live tree in a stand that holds 2-3 gallons of water is safer than an artificial tree.  However, a dry live tree can engulf a room in flames in 30 seconds.  Check water level in the stand at least twice per week.
  • Do not leave candles unattended.
  • Do not try to extinguish grease fires with water.  This can cause serious burns and will not put out the fire.  Have a lid that fits the pan ready to be put in place if grease ignites.
  • Place turkey fryers at least 10 feet away from buildings.  Check propane tank hoses before use.
  • When frying turkeys, determine the correct amount of oil by placing the frozen turkey in the fryer and covering it with water.  Remove it, and mark the water level.  This is the correct level for oil.  Follow manufacturer’s instructions when using fryers, and have lid for the fryer nearby as it can be placed on top to cut off oxygen to the fire if one should start.
  • Keep a charged size 3A40BC multi-dry chemical fire extinguisher in the home. Use the PASS method when using fire extinguishers – Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep.

Home and Personal Safety

  • Be aware of your surroundings when coming and going from car during shopping trips.
  • When possible, shop in pairs or groups.
  • Pepper spray can be an effective self-defense tool.  In addition, holding keys with one finger through the key ring allows keys to be used as a weapon against attackers.
  • Put all items in car trunk or somewhere out of view.  Keep vehicle doors locked.
  • Be a good neighbor.  Know when people should be coming and going from neighbors’ homes and call police if suspicious activity is observed.

Pet Safety

  • Keep poisonous flowers/plants such as poinsettias, lilies, and mistletoe berries out of pets’ reach.
  • Keep Christmas tree water stand covered.  Pinesap mixed with water can be poisonous to pets.  Preservatives such as aspirin or chemicals added to the water can also be poisonous.
  • Ensure that no ornaments, hooks, tinsel, ribbon are within the reach of pets.  These can cause serious internal injury or choking.  Pine needles can be hazardous as well.
  • Pieces of aluminum foil used to cover food and other food/candy wrappers smell like food and are attractive to pets.  Keep them out of reach, and keep garbage can covered.
  • The water in snow globes can contain antifreeze, which is poisonous to pets.
  • Secure trees to wall or ceiling hook with fishing line so pets cannot pull it over.
  • Cover or tape down electrical cords to keep pets from chewing on them.
  • Many food items can be harmful to pets. For example, chocolate is toxic and chicken/turkey bones are a choking hazard.  Rich, fatty foods and alcohol are also harmful to animals.
  • Keep candles on high shelves and use a fireplace screen to avoid burns.

There is no way to anticipate all safety hazards, and this list only includes some of the most common ones.

Keeping children safe online

Kim Everett | November 20, 2011

Countless online dangers exist for children, and it is up to parents to know what their kids are doing while on the computer, who they are communicating with, and what sites they visit.

According to information provided by Detective Tony Godwin of the Garland Police Department, an online predator is “one who uses cyberspace to hunt human beings with the intent to exploit, rob, plunder and pillage their body, mind, heart, and soul.”

These predators attempt to sexually exploit children by visiting with them online and gradually gaining their trust.  As the online visits progress, the child becomes more comfortable and more likely to divulge information that can put them in danger.  “Kids are curious by nature,” Godwin said.  “They can sometimes be too trusting and gullible.”  The detective offered the following information for parents:

Signs that a child might be at risk online

·         You find pornography on his/her computer.

·         Child receives calls from adults you don’t know or makes calls to numbers you do not recognize.

·         He/she receives gifts, packages, mail from someone you do not know.

·         Child turns off monitor or quickly changes the screen when you come into the room.

·         Child becomes withdrawn from family.

·         He/she is using an online account belonging to someone else.

What to do if you suspect child is communicating with an online predator

·         Consider talking with child about your suspicions.

·         See what is on the child’s computer.  If you do not know how, ask someone to help you.

·         DO NOT DELETE ANYTHING.

·         Call local law enforcement agency.

·         Monitor child’s access to all live communication methods – chat rooms, instant messaging, Internet Relay Chat, etc.  Also monitor his/her email.

Ways to minimize chances of your child being victimized

·         Talk to your child about sexual victimization and other online dangers.

·         Spend time with them online.  Ask them to teach you about their favorite online destinations.

·         Keep the computer in a common room in the house and watch what is going on.  You have a right to know what was on the screen if your child suddenly changes it when you walk by.

·         Use parental controls provided by your service provider.

·         Patrol the electronic chats.  Computer sex offenders prowl them.

·         Maintain access to their online account and randomly check email.  Know their passwords.

·         Find out what safeguards are utilized by your child’s school, library, and friends’ parents.

·         Instruct child to never arrange a face-to-face meeting with anyone they meet online.

·         Teach them not to upload photos of themselves to people they do not know personally.

·         Tell them not to give out information such as name, address, school name, telephone number.

·         Tell them not to download photos from unknown sources as they could contain sexually implicit images.

·         Tell them not to respond to messages/postings that are suggestive, obscene, or harassing.

·         Be sure they understand that things they are told online may, or may not, be true.

·         Instruct them not to complete online surveys as predators can gather the information.

·         Remind them that nothing is 100% safe, even if their website page is set to private.

·         Tell them to confide in a trusted adult about any suspicious behaviors, messages, etc.

Online predators pose danger to children

Kim Everett | November 14, 2011

The use of the Internet and cell phones has, in many ways, made life easier; and the popularity of social media has made keeping up with friends and families more convenient.  Along with the convenience, however, a new way to exploit and abuse children emerged.

The Garland Police Department has a dedicated unit, Internet Crimes Against Children, to deal with offenses that this technology has brought about.  Detective Tony Godwin, who has been with the GPD for 18 years, works to track down offenders and bring them to justice.

The crimes, which include offenses such as the possession and distribution of child pornography online and the solicitation of sex with children online, can be emotionally difficult to investigate, but Godwin focuses on his goal to arrest as many of these predators as he can.  He has been in the ICAC unit for three years, and he is part of the Northern Texas ICAC Task Force as well.

He said that nothing shocks him anymore, and even worse, every time he gets to a point where he thinks he has seen everything, something new happens.  “It doesn’t jade me at all…It’s just more motivation for me to put the bad people away,” he said.  “The satisfaction of doing that makes it worth it.”

“There’s nothing more satisfying than to know that you’ve stopped some pervert from molesting or exploiting a kid,” he said.  “It’s terrible what you have to look at and what you have to see, but getting those guys locked up is very rewarding.”

Godwin is grounded in his faith and family, which gives him the ability not to dwell on it when he goes home.  “I focus more on what I have and how fortunate I am,” he said.

One of the main aspects of his job is to spend time in online chat rooms posing as a child in an effort to attract predators and make cases against them.  “You have to be proactive,” Godwin said. “This problem is an epidemic.”

He establishes a profile, enters chat rooms, and waits for someone to contact him.  The conversations quickly get around to the people who contact him asking for age, sex, and location.  Eight of 10 times, they reply positively, and the communication starts.  These people believe they are chatting with a child.

He establishes online relationships with these people and then waits.  In many cases, they end up sending a private message to the supposed young girl, and the conversations turn sexual fairly quickly.  The offenders are primarily middle-aged, white males, but he has communicated with some who are older, and the youngest was 16.  The offenders do not typically have a criminal history.

One of the cases he handled is proof that the relationships can get started quickly.  A 32-year-old man that recently went to jail was professing love, wanting a relationship, talking about marriage, and offering gifts to someone that he thought was 14-year-old girl within three minutes of contact.  The shortest time Godwin has ever had from meeting online and the predator being ready to meet in person is 40 minutes.

Geographic location is not a problem for these offenders because many are willing to travel anywhere to meet their prey.  “I’ve been in a Texas chat room and nabbed a traveler from Las Vegas, Nevada,” Godwin said.  “I’ve also nabbed one from New York and one from Miami.”

A traveler case is one in which a predator will travel wherever necessary for the purpose of having a sexual relationship with what they believe to be a child.

He’s made two arrests of travelers who had previous convictions for the same offense, and Godwin’s frustration level rises when predators get probation only.  One case, which involved an Air Force II flight attendant, is an example:  The convicted predator went to jail in Ohio, and when he was released, he petitioned for permission to move to Las Vegas.  Permission was denied, but after his parole was up, he moved.  Once in Las Vegas, he was deemed a “low level” offender, and in Nevada, low level offenders are not listed as sex offenders on public websites.  He was free to live wherever he wanted.  Twelve days after the move to Vegas, he was online with Godwin, who was posing as a child.  Officers did a reverse sting on him, and he is now in federal prison for 40 years.

Even though this is ultimately a success story, this man had been convicted, sent to prison, and released to re-offend.

Internet service providers have methods in place to prevent these crimes and software to alert the providers’ monitors, but the volume makes it impossible to watch everyone.  When ISPs are alerted, they turn the information over to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children who acts as a clearing house.  NCMEC researches each case, and sends it to the appropriate law enforcement agency.

To supplement the ISP’s efforts, Godwin suggests the use of monitoring software.  “E Blaster is monitoring software for about $100.  It’s a great tool for parents to install on computers; the kids don’t even know it’s there,” he said.

Godwin has no problem with letting his children use the Internet, and they have Facebook pages; but he monitors everything they do online and he is in charge of their Facebook settings.

Some parents see this as an invasion of their children’s privacy, but Godwin finds that viewpoint foolish.  “If you think your kid needs privacy, you’re setting yourself up for failure,” he said.

Godwin told a MySpace horror story in which a couple of pre-teen girls had a fight, which led to one of them creating a phony account for the other.  The account included a provocative photo and a quote that contained an extremely explicit fake quote.  Within one day, more than 100 men had tried to communicate with this 11-year-old girl in the phony profile.

Godwin was able to track down the girl and unravel the mystery because she was wearing a T-shirt with a school logo that he recognized.

The girl had no idea what kind of danger she put her classmate in.  If Godwin had been a predator, he would only have had to go to the school, wait for her to come out and follow her home.  The girl who set up the fake site didn’t know that it is a felony to set up a phony social networking site for another person.

“Education is the key,” Godwin said.  “Parents have to monitor what their kids are doing online all the time.”

Watch for a follow-up article containing tips on keeping your kids safe online next week.

Health department inspections: November 7-11

Cindy Corley, Garland Health Department | November 14, 2011

Each week the city of Garland Health Department conducts inspections of establishments where food is served.  Inspections include day care centers, retirement homes, school cafeterias, restaurants - fast food and dine-in, convenience stores, and grocery stores.

A failing grade includes anything below 60.  Any establishment scoring less than 70 is deemed "high risk" and inspection frequency of that establishment is increased.  Mandatory closure is imposed on establishments scoring below 50.

Join the Stop Diabetes movement

Kim Everett | November 5, 2011

November is American Diabetes Month and a perfect time to raise awareness about the seriousness of diabetes.  It is a condition in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin, a hormone that helps the body use glucose for energy, and there are three types of the disease.

Type 2 diabetes is the most common form and is most often diagnosed in adults.  Type 1 diabetes is most often diagnosed in children and young adults.  Gestational diabetes appears during pregnancy and puts women at higher risk for type 2 diabetes later in life.

Diabetes is a disease with serious consequences, so the ADA has instituted the Stop Diabetes movement to encourage everyone to get involved.

It takes a serious toll on the health of those who live with it.  Some of the more common conditions caused by diabetes are nerve damage and slowed digestion, along with the risk of amputation and blindness.  It is also the leading cause of kidney failure, and the risk for stroke and death form heart disease is two to four times higher among people with diabetes.

The ADA offers the following advice for people living with diabetes:

  • Have your blood pressure checked regularly.

  • Have cholesterol checked regularly and take measures to keep numbers in recommended range.

  • Work with a dietician to customize a meal plan for your requirements.

  • Choose a variety of foods, low in fat, and learn how to count carbs.

  • Lose weight if needed.

  • Exercise – be more active during the day and work up to walking at least 30 minutes most days.

  • Get help to quit smoking.

  • Talk to your healthcare provider about reducing your risk for heart disease and stroke.

  • Take prescribed medicines regularly.

You are at risk if:

  • You are overweight.

  • You have a parent, brother, or sister who has diabetes.

  • You are African American, Hispanic/Latino, Native American, Asian American, or Pacific Islander.

  • You had a baby weighing more than nine pounds or had gestational diabetes.

  • You have high blood pressure.

  • You have low HDL – good cholesterol.

  • You have high triglycerides.

897,000 individuals have joined the Stop Diabetes movement, and the ADA hopes to have one million

supporters by the end of this year.  Visit www.stopdiabetes.com for more information.

Health department inspections: October 17-21

Cindy Corley, Garland Health Department | October 24, 2011

Each week the city of Garland Health Department conducts inspections of establishments where food is served.  Inspections include day care centers, retirement homes, school cafeterias, restaurants - fast food and dine-in, convenience stores, and grocery stores.

A failing grade includes anything below 60.  Any establishment scoring less than 70 is deemed "high risk" and inspection frequency of that establishment is increased.  Mandatory closure is imposed on establishments scoring below 50.

Enjoy a safe, fun-filled Halloween

Kim Everett | October 23, 2011

It’s that time of year again when children love to put on their costumes and go out in search of sweet treats.  Common sense combined with caution can ensure the kids’ safety.

The following suggestions provide an overview, but parents are encouraged to consider every aspect of the activities in which their kids will participate and anticipate possible hazards or dangers.

Costumes

¨       Be sure that costumes fit properly and are short enough to prevent tripping.

¨       Do not allow kids to wear oversized shoes or high heels–they should wear sturdy, well-fitting shoes.

¨       Choose bright colored costumes made of flame-retardant materials.

¨       Attach reflective tape to costumes if children will be out after dark.

¨       It is best to use kid-friendly make-up, but if a mask is worn, be sure that it does not obstruct vision.  It should fit securely and have eyeholes large enough to allow good peripheral vision.

¨       Wash off make-up before bedtime to avoid skin and eye irritation.

¨       Pointed props such as wands and swords can be a safety hazard – use only those made of soft, flexible materials.

Trick or Treating

¨       Stress to children not to eat any treats until parents have inspected them for torn packaging and items that are not sealed or look questionable.

¨       For younger children, remove gum, peanuts, and treats that could be choking hazards

¨       Go trick or treating with younger kids.  Encourage older ones to trick or treat in large groups and help them plan a safe route.  Agree in advance on a time for them to return home.

¨       Remind trick or treaters to walk – not run, use the sidewalk, and to stay in populated places.

¨       Attach tags with name, address, and phone number to kids’ costumes in case they get lost and remind them that it is OK to call 911 if they need help.

¨       Remind children to look both ways before crossing streets and obey all traffic signals.

¨       Have them carry flashlights with fresh batteries.

¨       Remind kids to never enter homes or apartments and to only go to the door at familiar houses where the porch light is on.  Tell them not to go to the back door of any house.

¨       Remind trick or treaters to never get into a car with a stranger.

¨       Never allow a child to trick or treat alone.

¨       Make sure kids know not to approach unfamiliar pets or animals.

¨       Do not allow kids to trick or treat in skates or roller blades.

Advice for Homeowners

¨       Be sure lawn is clear of tripping hazards such as water hoses, decorations, toys, and bicycles.

¨       Turn lights on the walkways and porch.

¨       Do not place candles in places where kids’ costumes can come in contact with them.

¨       Sweep wet leaves away from walkways, steps, and porch.

Pets

¨       Halloween can be a scary, even dangerous, time for pets.  Do not leave them outside.

¨       Be sure your pet does not get out when opening the door for trick or treaters.

¨       Ensure that your pet is wearing proper identification in case it gets out of the house.

¨       Chocolate is poisonous to some animals, and candy of any type is not good for them.

¨       Foil and cellophane candy wrappers and small items on pet costumes can be choking hazards.

¨       Dressing pets in costumes can cause them stress.  Do this only if you are certain that it does not bother your pet.

¨       Keep decorations, lights, and cords out of reach of pets.

¨       Use caution with candles – pets can knock them over and cause fires or injuries.

Health department inspections: September 19-23

Cindy Corley, Garland Health Department | September 26, 2011

Each week the city of Garland Health Department conducts inspections of establishments where food is served.  Inspections include day care centers, retirement homes, school cafeterias, restaurants - fast food and dine-in, convenience stores, and grocery stores.

A failing grade includes anything below 60.  Any establishment scoring less than 70 is deemed "high risk" and inspection frequency of that establishment is increased.  Mandatory closure is imposed on establishments scoring below 50.

September is Baby Safety Month:  Watch for in-home dangers

Kim Everett | September 24, 2011

Home should be a safe haven for everyone, especially babies and children, but it is easy to overlook potential hazards that put kids at risk.  Baby-proofing the inside of a home requires careful scrutiny of each room.  Professional baby-proofers recommend that parents get on their knees and look through every room from the same level as a young child.

Some of the common hazards are choking/airway obstruction and accidental poisoning.  There are also burn and drowning dangers, falls and the danger of things falling on children, and environmental hazards.

Safety tips provided by SafeKids USA to help parents protect children include:

Choking/airway obstruction

  • Keep small objects such as buttons, coins, small toys, and marbles out of young children’s reach.  Hard candy, popcorn, nuts, and corn chips are also potential hazards.  Balloons and balloon pieces can cause choking as well.
  • Store plastic bags out of children’s reach.

Environmental issues

  • Install smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors in sleeping areas and test them monthly.  Change batteries bi-annually.
  • Have heating systems checked annually.
  • Test homes built before 1978 for lead paint.

Falling hazards

  • Install safety guards on windows above the first floor.
  • Never trust a screen to prevent a child from falling out of a window.
  • Move furniture away from windows and keep them locked when closed.
  • Install safety gates at top and bottom of staircases.
  • Ensure that stairways and hallways are well lit and clear of clutter.
  • Do not leave babies alone on beds, sofas, or changing tables.
  • Use safety straps with infant carriers, strollers, swings, and high chairs.
  • Do not use baby walkers on wheels.
  • Anchor shelves and unstable furniture to floor or wall to prevent them from being pulled over.

Fire/burn dangers

  • Do not leave candles, matches, lighters, or flammable materials within children’s reach.  Never leave burning candles unattended.
  • Do not place space heaters within children’s reach or near anything flammable.
  • Use back burners on stoves.  Turn pot handles to the back.
  • Do not hold children while cooking or serving hot food.
  • Test temperature of food before giving to small children or babies.
  • Set water heater temperature at less than 120 degrees.  Keep baby’s bath water around 100 degrees.

Drowning hazards

  • Never leave babies or young children unattended in bathtub.
  • Keep toilet lids down and locked and bathroom and utility room doors closed.
  • Do not leave water standing in the tub or sink, and do not leave buckets containing water or liquid unattended.

Accidental poisoning

  • Install locks/safety latches on cabinets containing potential poisons such as cleaning supplies, medicine, makeup, liquor, pesticides, etc. Store these items in the highest cabinets and never underestimate a child’s ability to climb.
  • Do not leave potentially poisonous products unattended while in use.
  • Follow dosage instructions when giving medicine to children and use child resistant packages.
  • Never refer to medicine or vitamins as candy.
  • Know which houseplants are poisonous and keep them out of reach.
  • If poisoning is suspected, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222 or physician immediately.  Do not induce vomiting.
  • Keep activated charcoal on hand to be used only if advised by Poison Control Center or physician.  Ipecac is no longer recommended as a treatment for poisoning.

Miscellaneous

  • Keep electrical outlets covered when not in use.

  • Consider installing cordless window coverings or secure cords out of children’s reach.

  • Store glass items, scissors, and knives out of children’s reach.

  • Call 911 if child collapses, can’t breathe, is having a seizure, or choking.

  • Learn CPR and the Heimlich maneuver.

Numerous dangers exist, and it would be impossible to list or anticipate them all.  This information is intended to be a guide for getting started but does not cover every possible hazard/danger.  Discuss home safety issues with pediatricians and/or consult a baby-proofing professional.

Reduce risk of falls for older Americans

Kim Everett | September 18, 2011

The consequences of falls can be especially dangerous for older Americans, and often, preventive steps can be taken to alleviate or lessen the risks.  September 18-24 is Fall Prevention Awareness Week, a great time to check for and eliminate hazards.  Follow the guidelines of the Center for Disease Control to make older family members’ and friends’ homes safer:

Begin an exercise program

Exercise makes people stronger and can improve balance/coordination.  Lack of exercise leads to weakness and increases chances of falling.  Ask health care provider about the best program.

Have medicines reviewed

Have doctor or pharmacist look at all medicines including non-prescription items.  As people get older, the way medicines work in their bodies can change. Some medicines or combinations of medicines can cause drowsiness or light-headedness, which can lead to a fall.

Get vision checked
Lens prescription may not be correct, or there could be conditions such as glaucoma or cataracts that limit vision.  Poor vision increases chances of falling.

Environmental hazards

The most common hazard is tripping over objects on the floor. Others include poor lighting, loose rugs, lack of grab bars or poorly located/mounted grab bars, and unsturdy furniture.

Outdoors

§  Repair cracks and edges of sidewalks and driveways.

§  Install handrails on stairs and steps.

§  Remove high doorway thresholds.

§  Trim shrubbery along pathways.

§  Keep walk areas clear of clutter, rocks, and tools, as well as snow and ice.

§  Install adequate lighting by doorways and along walkways.

All living spaces

§  Wear shoes that provide support and have thin non-slip soles. Avoid shoes with deep treads.

§  Use a change in color to denote changes in surface types or levels.

§  Secure rugs and carpet edges with nonskid tape.  Avoid throw rugs.

§  Remove oversized furniture and objects.

§  Have at least one phone extension in each level of the home with emergency numbers at each one.

§  Add electrical outlets.

§  Reduce clutter.

§  Check lighting for adequate illumination and glare control, and maintain nightlights or motion-sensitive lighting.

§  Use contrast in paint, furniture, and carpet colors.

§  Install electronic emergency response system if needed.

Bathroom

§  Install grab bars on walls around tub and beside toilet, strong enough to hold your weight.

§  Add nonskid mats or appliques to bathtubs.

§  Mount liquid soap dispenser on the bathtub wall.

§  Install a portable, hand-held shower head.

§  Add a padded bath or shower seat.

§  Install raised toilet seat if needed.

§  Use nonskid mats or carpet on floor surfaces that might get wet.

Kitchen

§  Keep commonly used items within easy reach.

§  Use a sturdy step stool for reaching items on high shelves.

§  Make sure appliance cords are out of the way.

§  Avoid using floor polish or wax to reduce slick surfaces.

Living, dining, family room

§  Keep electrical and telephone cords out of the way.

§  Arrange furniture for easy movement.

§  Make sure chairs and couches are easy to get in and out of.

§  Remove caster wheels from furniture.

§  Use television remote control and cordless phone.

Bedroom

§  Use a bedside light with a switch that is easy to turn on and off.

§  Have a nightlight.

§  Locate telephone within reach of bed.

§  Adjust height of bed to make it easy to get in and out of.

§  Have a firm chair with arms to sit on while dressing.

Stairways, hallways, pathways

§  Keep free of clutter.

§  Make sure carpet is secured and get rid of throw rugs.

§  Install tightly fastened hand rails running the entire length and along both sides of stairs.

§  Handrails should be 34 inches high and have a diameter of about 1.5 inches.

§  Apply brightly colored tape to the face of the steps to make them more visible.

§  Optimal stair dimensions are 7.2 inch riser heights with an 11 or 12 inch tread width.

§  Have adequate lighting in stairways, hallways and pathways, with switches at each end.

Information provided by the Centers for Disease Control.

September is the time to concentrate on child safety measures

Kim Everett | September 8, 2011

September is Baby Safety Month, and one of the most effective ways to keep children of all ages safe is to follow the laws regarding car safety seats.

It is estimated that seven out of 10 of children are improperly restrained in their seats. Either the seat is incorrectly installed or the harness is not set correctly.  The following child restraint recommendations from the Texas Department of Public Safety and SafeKids USA are not all-inclusive but provide basic information.  For more details:  www.usa.safekids.org and www.txdps.state.tx.us/director_staff/public_information/carseat.htm

Infants

  • Birth to at least 1 year old and at least 20 pounds – use infant only or rear-facing car seats.
  • Infants over 20 pounds but less than 35 pounds – use rear-facing convertible seats designed for heavier infants.
  • Safety seats should always be placed in back seat.
  • Use car’s safety belt or LATCH system to lock the safety seat into the car.  The seat should not move more than one inch in any direction.
  • Ensure that harness straps are at or below shoulder level.
  • Adjust chest clip to baby’s armpit level.

Toddlers

  • More than 1 year old and over 20 pounds– use forward-facing seat with harness.
  • Use vehicle’s safety belt or LATCH system to lock the seat into the car.  Seat should not move more than one inch in any direction.
  • Place car seats in back seat only.
  • Harness straps should be at or above shoulder level.  Be sure harness is tight.
  • Adjust chest clip to toddler’s armpit level.
  • Use top tether if available in vehicle to limit forward motion of child’s head in a crash.
  • Seats with 5-point harnesses are the safest.

Older children

  • All kids under 8 years old or 4’ 9”– use forward-facing booster seats (with or without backs) in the back seat of the vehicle.  Booster seats adjust the child’s height in the seat to make the shoulder/lap belt fit properly.
  • After a child has reached the age of 8, perform the Safety Belt Fit Test to determine if he/she is ready to move out of booster seat.  Have the child sit all the way back on the vehicle seat with back straight against the back of the seat and buckle the lap/shoulder seat belt over them.  Check for these things:  Do his/her legs bend naturally at the knees over the edge of the seat?  Does the lap portion of the belt fit low over hips and tops of thighs?  Does the shoulder portion fit across the center of the chest?
  • If the answer to any of these questions is no, the child is still safer in a booster seat.
  • Often, children in poorly fitting adult seat belts slump down and this can cause serious injuries to their neck and internal organs during a car crash.

 Miscellaneous

  • Distracted drivers are a danger to everyone.  Cell phone use, eating, and grooming while driving, along with talking to passengers, can take a driver’s attention away from the road.
  • Do not put shoulder belt under child’s arm or behind the back.
  • Children learn from adults – set a good example by wearing seat belt properly at all times.
  • Insist that everyone the child rides with follow age/size-appropriate car seat safety requirements.
  • Never allow a child to sit in the front seat of a vehicle with active air bags.
  • Refer to the manufacturers’ instructions and the vehicle owner’s manual when installing car seats.
  • Use only seats with all parts, instructions, and labels.
  • Register seats with the manufacturer in case of recalls and watch www.recalls.gov.
