New Beginning Center set
to strike domestic violence

Posted January 14, 2012

New Beginning Center is gearing up to strike domestic violence during its Ninth Annual Bowling Tournament sponsored by Honeywell. The event is scheduled for January 28, 1:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. at Plano Super Bowl, 2521 Ave K in Plano.

“Our mission is to bring an end to domestic violence in our community, and the bowling tournament helps raise funds to support this mission. Our goal is two-fold: to raise funds to support the services provided by the agency and to build awareness about the agency and its mission of ending domestic violence,” said Jennifer Morrison, executive director of Garland’s New Beginning Center.

This will be the ninth year for the event that usually attracts about 200 bowlers and spectators to the Plano Super Bowl. A raffle will be available that includes prizes from restaurants and entertainment tickets and many others. There will also be the friendly competition between those in the tournament. Prizes will be given to the highest scoring team and individual, best dressed team, most strikes, best team spirit and a few other fun categories.

Registration is open for teams of six or more individuals that would like to participate in the tournament. Booth space is available to vendors who would like to sell or display their products or services.

To register or get a booth visit http://www.newbeginningcenter.org/category/events/, email Stephanie at development@newbeginningcenter.org or call 972-276-0423.

“This bowling tournament is a great way to have fun while making an impact on hundreds of families that are adversely affected by family violence each year,” Morrison said.

According to The Texas Council on Family Violence, an alarming trend in North Texas shows escalating deaths of innocent children and family members in domestic violence murders. In Texas, 142 women were killed in domestic violence murders in 2010. This was a sizable increase of deaths from the previous year.

New Beginning Center is a nonprofit agency, serving Dallas and Rockwall Counties fostering an environment of safety, support and respect for families and victims affected by domestic violence. The agency achieves this mission through crisis intervention, counseling, shelter, education, advocacy, and diverse community partnerships.

Good Samaritans announces costume party fundraiser

Posted October 6, 2011

As the Texas Theatre, located at 213 W. Jefferson in Dallas, celebrates its 80th anniversary year, join us in honoring its full history with a costume party that celebrates its past while raising money for Good Samaritans of Garland.  The party will be held October 23, 5 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.

Be transported back to the theatre's early vaudeville roots of the 1930s with sights and sounds of music by Ricki Derek, The Brehms Band, Lainey Bernstein and Chico Marx, among others.

Add to the atmosphere by coming not just in costume but by coming in character as your favorite 20th century Hollywood star, artist, or literary character. Imagine who in the past 80 years *could* have walked through the doors of the Texas Theatre and come as them.

There will be costume contests, best women's, best men's, and best group or couple, with attendees voting for each other by placing a character's name on a dollar bill. The more dollars a costume brings in the more likely that person is to win.  Bring lots of $1s, $5s, and $10s to make your votes count.

There will be a screening of Cary Grant’s first film “This is the Night” (1932) at the end of the evening starting at 8 p.m.

The suggested donation for those in costume will be $10 and $20 for those that come as themselves.  Valet parking will be available for $5.

Richardson Square hosts auto theft prevention event

Posted May 18, 2011

The Richardson Police Department in partnership with the North Texas Auto Theft Task Force and Target at Richardson Square will be offering free VIN etchings and conducting H.E.A.T. registrations on Friday, May 27.

Area residents are invited to bring their car between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. to have the VIN etched into each window. VIN etching is used to deter auto theft. Car thieves who steal cars for resale or for parts will tend to avoid vehicles that have the glass etched with a VIN. Etching reduces the criminal’s profit associated with replacing etched windows, and such windows are worthless for resale.

The H.E.A.T. (Help End Auto Theft) registration program will also be onsite to place stickers on vehicles and register them in a statewide database used by law enforcement in Texas. H.E.A.T. registration allows police to stop the vehicle if it is operating between the hours of 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. to determine if the driver is the owner.

The event will be conducted on a first come first serve basis, only takes minutes to complete, and is free of charge. If it should rain, the event will be rescheduled with details published at a later time.

WHEN:             Friday, May 27 -- 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

COST:              FREE and open to the community

WHERE:           Richardson Square -- Parking lot near Target, 601 S. Plano Road, Richardson, TX

MORE INFO:     Contact the Richardson PD Crime Prevention Unit, 972-744-4955, for information.

Jethsuby Scholarship Fund invites community to fundraiser

Posted March 26, 2011

The Jethsuby Scholarship Fund of The Catholic Foundation will host “Mi Cristo Roto,” (My Broken Christ) a one-man show featuring Mexican actor Alberto Mayagoitia on April 30 at the John Paul II High School gymnasium.  Funds raised will be directed at the fund which benefits Hispanic elementary students by providing the necessary resources to obtain a Catholic education. Tickets are available at the Cathedral of Guadalupe Library at 2215 Ross Avenue in Dallas and at the Libreria Parroquial at 930 West Jefferson Blvd. in Dallas. The entry fee will be $15 for adults and $7.50 for children.

The Jethsuby Scholarship Fund was created by Dr. and Mrs. Mauricio Delgado through The Catholic Foundation in December 2009. They named the fund after a Hispanic child they knew and believed could have benefited greatly from a Catholic education. Since the fund’s establishment, Dr. Delgado has hosted various fundraisers.  This is the second time he has invited Alberto Mayagoitia to perform his popular one-man show. During two performances of the play held last March, approximately $25,000 was raised. One of the performances was a sell-out.

“As a highly-regarded Mexican actor and an advocate for the Jethsuby Scholarship Fund, Alberto Mayagoitia resonates with Hispanic audiences, and this was very apparent with the popularity and success of last year’s fundraiser,” said Dr. Mauricio Delgado, director of neurology at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children.  “It was truly impressive to see how many members of the community came out to enjoy a great show for a great cause, and I look forward to another outpouring of support on April 30 from Hispanics and the entire Dallas community.”

Since its establishment, eight scholarships have been granted by the Jethsuby Fund which covered up to 50 percent of tuition to any Catholic school within the Diocese of Dallas for one academic year. Nine more scholarships will be granted in 2011.The ultimate goal is to raise $1 million over the next two years to establish an endowment that
will enable the fund to continue in perpetuity, providing scholarships from the endowment.

Additionally, The Jethsuby Scholarship Fund is open to donations from anyone interested in helping Hispanic students attend Catholic elementary school.  Donations can be made to The Catholic Foundation, 5310 Harvest Hill Rd., Suite 248, Dallas, TX  75230.

Chartered in 1955, The Catholic Foundation was founded by a group of dedicated Catholic laymen with a vision that extended far beyond the charitable needs of the moment.  This independent, nonprofit corporation dedicates its resources to compassionate charitable giving through grants provided by benefactors through its many planned giving programs.  The Foundation has been able to provide approximately $25.3 million through hundreds of grants to various religious, educational and charitable organizations within the Diocese of Dallas during its 50 plus years of existence. In addition, donor-advised funds maintained at the foundation have accounted for many more grants amounting to millions of dollars over the years.  For information about The Catholic Foundation, call 972.661.9792.

Downtown gym hosts blood drive

Posted March 8, 2011

Last October, many people graciously assisted in the 3Q Fitness American Red Cross Blood Drive.  ARC is again asking for the community’s help.  Last month, they issued this statement:

“We have lost over 30,000 units in the US since January due to winter storms.  Those of us in Texas were watching this inclement weather from afar until last week, when we had to make the tough decision to suspend all blood collection for almost a week.  We had to call in the National Guard to ship what little product we had on the shelf to our local hospitals.  We are currently at a zero-day supply and hospitals are beginning to go on backorder as they place their requests for platelets and red blood cells.

The shortfall of blood will have to be made up somehow so that those in need will not have to go without. If you are a regular donor and enough time has passed since your last donation, please make an appointment to give again soon. If you are a past donor who hasn’t given blood in a while, now is a great time to return to this rewarding service to patients.

In the United States, a blood transfusion is needed about every two seconds. And on any given day, patients in our country require an average of 41,000 units of blood. Storms or not, an adequate blood supply remains critical. Times like these give even more meaning to the Red Cross tagline: The need is constant. The gratification is instant. Give blood.”

So, 3Q Fitness is again asking for help from the community.  First and foremost, blood donors are needed.  However, some helped in other ways last time… by donating time or promotional items, or simply by helping get the word out!

This event is being held on Saturday, March 26.  American Red Cross Blood donations will begin at 10 a.m.  Anyone who would like to participate in any way or anyone with questions should email Tracy@3QFitness.com or call 972-494-2545."

Searching for a Star competition

Posted February 7, 2011

Is the next Taylor Swift texting in your living room?  Is America’s next Justin Bieber at your breakfast table?  Is the next Usher upstairs?

Searching for a Star is an eight-week stage course and competition for singers ages 8 – 21. All are invited to compete, regardless of their level of training. The goal is to find talented area singers, teach them to be even better, and reward them with scholarships and cash prizes for their schools.

Garland resident Brittany Thomas was the first place winner in the 2010 Searching for a Star senior division (age 14-17). She won $1,000, and SFAS awarded a $500 scholarship to her school’s fine arts department (Naaman Forest High School).

It’s the fifth year for the competition, sponsored by the Ballard School for the Performing Arts in Wylie. Founder Rob Hunter says that, although the competition was inspired by TV’s “American Idol,” it’s more than a contest.  “Searching for a Star is designed to educate, build self-esteem, and strengthen the character of our youth and young adults. It’s as simple as that … it’s completely about sharpening the talent of our kids and helping to mold them into the role models of tomorrow,” he said.

For the first round of auditions, students should prepare 16 bars of any music they feel comfortable to sing a cappella. They will perform for a panel of three judges.

Deadline for audition registration is 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 18. Auditions are on a first-come, first-served basis; visit the Searching for a Star website, www.searchingforastar.org and click on Contest Info for a downloadable registration form.  Fill it out, bring it to the Ballard School of the Performing Arts at 130 N. Ballard Ave. in Wylie, or fax it to 972-461-0597. There’s a $35 registration fee which can be dropped off with the form, mailed, or paid online using a credit card.  Auditions are at the Ballard School of the Performing Arts.

Singers compete in three categories: elementary (ages 8 through 10), middle (11 – 14), and senior (15 – 21). Three contestants in each group will advance to finals and the chance to become the overall winner.

First-, second-, and third-place performers in each category will go on to the finals to compete for the top prize. The overall winner will receive $1,000 cash, and his or her school will win $500 for its fine arts department.

During the eight-week stage course leading up to the competition, performers will sing before a live audience and experience the benefit of professional workshops taught by guest artists who will emphasize stage presence, vocal techniques, animation – all of which will make them more confident, on stage and off.

Garland church celebrates 53 years with Crystal Aikin

Posted March 12, 2011

The church on The Mount is on the move.  For over half a century, Mount Hebron Missionary Baptist Church of Garland, located at 1233 State Highway 66, has been a place of transformation for thousands. The church will pause during its upcoming 53-year anniversary service on Sunday, March 20 to reflect, give thanks, and celebrate the future.

Special guest for both services will be BET Sunday Best winner and national gospel recording artist, Crystal Aikin. Aikin, a two-time Stellar Award winner and a Dove Award nominee, will minister at both the 7:50 a.m. and 11 a.m. services. Nearly 5,000 members will convene during both services, as the church recommits its dedication to serve Garland and surrounding communities.

January 25, 1958, a group of 10 Christians were inspired to bring about a change in the Garland community and increase the glorification of God's name; thus, Mt. Hebron Missionary Baptist Church was born, and as they say “The rest, is history.”  Leonard Leach, Senior Pastor at The Mount for the last 15 years is proud of the history, progress, and the direction of the church. “We are grateful to our founding family who inspired us to bring about change in the Garland community. For 53 years we have expected “great things” from God and He has delivered,” he said. “As we celebrate 53 years of service to our Lord, we are doing great things for God.”  Leach also said that he and the congregation are delighted to have the award-winning gospel recording artist, Crystal Aikin ministering in music at their anniversary services.

Mt. Hebron Missionary Baptist Church has been serving the Garland Community for more than five decades. It is the vision of the church to seek the redemption, restoration, and redirection of family members who will be “agents” of spiritual change in their communities. Mt. Hebron's staple projects include Mount Hebron Urban Community Housing (M.U.C.H.), which has provided housing for thousands of homeless individuals in the Garland Community, Mt. Hebron Christian Academy (MHCA), which has educated over 1500 pre-school through 2nd grade students in Garland and the surrounding communities, and, worldwide, the church supports ministries in Zambia, Mexico, Pakistan, and Haiti. For more information about the church and to make donations call 972-276-5218 or visit www.onthemount.org.
